A High Risk, High Reward Situation For the Gay NFL Players
Gay NFL players have helped the world to know and accept the fact that being gay is nothing to be ashamed of. Though their numbers might be small, these individuals are trail blazers for the openly gay community as well as for normal people all over the world. Here is a compilation of gay NFL players who have been icons on the big stage. David Kopelmann played pro football from 1964 to 1972. During this time he made history by becoming the first openly gay player in the major league.
David Johnson signed with the Vikings following his retirement from the NFL. He is currently an offensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers. In his two years with the team he has displayed a strong loyalty towards his gay lover, Dustin Johnson. Prior, to joining the Vikings he was one of the top tight ends in the NFL.
Some might think that openly gay NFL players are a little too trendy. Well, offensive lineman in particular is a fashion statement unto itself. There are plenty of gay NFL players who are football superstars because of their sex appeal. There are even some NFL stars such as Julius Peppers, who has become openly gay heroes because of their sexuality. It is rare to see an offensive lineman playing football in the NFL that doesn t come out of the closet.
One of the most high profile players to come out as gay recently is 49ers defensive end Chris Smith. Smith was drafted by the Saints in the third round of the NFL draft. Free Slots The Saints chose not to sign him and instead they released him. This decision caused a lot of controversy within the Saints organization because they had openly talked about his sexuality even though he was not a member of their organization when he was drafted.
It didn’t take long for others in the NFL to pick up where the Saints left off. Within a matter of days the buzz began about Smith. Many assume that he was cut by his former team due to his sexual orientation. He has denied this claim. In fact, general manager Jerry Jones even made public statements saying he believes that Smith’s sexual orientation is a factor in his lack of productivity on the field.
So, what does this mean for the other openly gay players in the NFL? The first openly gay player to come out was offensive lineman Jason Collins. He played for the Giants for just one season before announcing he was going to come out of the closet. Collins is now an unrestricted free agent.
This means that there are several other openly gay players in the NFL that we may not have even heard of yet. You may have even seen Colin Kaepernick signs some papers after being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. There are other players who have talked about coming out and joining teams like the Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens, but no one has yet come out and said they are going to play for a different team because they are gay.
But what it also means is that the NFL has created a very high risk situation for itself. Imagine if any player came out and said he was gay and then was cut by his own team? I think we can all agree that the NFL has put itself in an extremely tricky situation, but considering that most of the players who have reached out to me and told me about their sexual orientation, it only means a positive thing.
